Every holiday season I kind of latch onto a specific project where I fall in love and go a little overboard. In the past, this has often been mittens of all sorts, ornaments or socks, or even last year’s Fabric Stars. Well, a couple of months ago I ran across a new little pattern that has caught my heart and has set my needles on fire. It is called the Hella Hot Hexie Cowl by Catherine Clark of the Brooklyn General Store. I love Catherine’s work and she has permitted us to create kits with her cowl pattern. Thank you, Catherine. Click here to see the pattern info.

Please Read! Important Yarn and Needle Notes for the Hexie Cowl:
1. You need three colors of our Woolens yarn. You can use them in any order for the Main Color, Contrast Color 1, and Contrast Color 2. You can look at my choices or switch the colors around.

2. I used a US size 5, 16-inch circular needle to obtain the 24 sts per 4-inch gauge or 6 sts per inch gauge. This came out perfectly.

3. The Main Color yarn will run very tight. I had about 3.5 grams left of the Main Color (MC) at the end with a slight modification for the ribbing. You’ll need to modify the ribbing sections by adding in one of the contrast colors or you could eliminate one of the hexie rows to end up with enough MC yarn.
Here’s what I did to make one skein work for the Main Color. I used one of the contrast colors to cast on and then I worked one round of the rib in the contrast color before switching to the main color. Then at the end I switched to the contrast color to work the last round of ribbing and for the bind off. This worked fine for me but you may want to do all of the rib in one of the contrast colors and then start with the main color. Or you could do a few less rounds of the rib on both ends of the cowl.

Please take note of the above before starting!

4. The first hexie cowl I made was in the Garland (forest green) MC, Greenland (mint green), Vine (heathered medium green), and Brink (hot pink) colorway. I used four colors for this version. So I worked three of the hexie sections in the different contrast colorways, and for the fourth hexie section I striped the three contrast colors (2 rounds each). This looks great. I didn’t modify the ribbing for this one and was about 2 rounds short of the main color for the ribbing at the end so I found a leftover scrap of the same to finish it off.

Lastly, there are limited quantities of the hexie cowl kits. We have a new order of Woolens being worked on right now at the Harrisville Historical Mill in New Hampshire. Hopefully, we will have the new batch of yarn early in the new year. Fingers crossed. So if you’re interested hop on over quickly to grab a kit.
