Last fall my family went to our beloved Door County for a week. I grabbed a bunch of projects and yarn to bring along, as you do. One of the projects was yarn to make a new pair of socks. I had seen that Kay F. Jones, of the Bakery Bears Podcast, designed the squishiest socks ever called the Crunkled Socks. I wasn’t really in the mood to knit socks but I loved the look of these and thought I would give them a try.

I think you know what I might say next. The Crunkled Socks completely drew me in and I literally could not put them down. I had them done in a matter of days. These are the most fun, mesmerizing, addicting, cute, scrunchy, squishy, soothing, simple, entertaining (I could add so many more descriptive words here) socks I have ever knitted. I loved making the Crunkled Socks in our Home Fingering Weight wool. It’s truly the perfect pairing.

I want you to have this experience, too!! The pattern by Kay F. Jones is simple and well-written. I have permission from Kay to create kits using her pattern. Thank you, Kay. I had so much fun putting together fun color combinations in our Home Fingering Weight wool for our new Crunkled Socks Kits.

When I went back to read Kay’s description of the Crunkled Socks I was blown away because I had the exact experience she describes making the socks. It’s worth the read. Kay has special techniques and a video tutorial included to help you make the best socks.

From Kay:

"I absolutely love knitting socks, and with this new design I wanted to create something that feels like it knits itself.

One afternoon, after spending some time writing letters to loved ones, I decided to cast on a new sock. Whilst I wanted to lose myself in the relaxing rhythm of my knitting, sometimes a plain stocking stitch sock is not quite enough. So, I created my ‘Crunkled Socks’.

The repeating pattern reminded me of the writing paper that was crunkled up on my desk. But these socks hold a secret - hidden within them are all of my very favorite sock knitting techniques.

So, get ready for a project that has my ‘Umbrella Toe’, a perfectly fitting heel flap and turn, and a video tutorial to show you exactly how I work my 2 stitch gap-closing technique for those pesky holes at the gusset corners. No holes here !!

When you combine all of this with that hypnotic repeat, I’m sure that you will also agree that the ‘Crunkled Socks’ do indeed knit themselves !”

Judging by Kay’s words, it’s all true!

Included in the kit is enough Home Fingering Weight wool to make 1 pair of Crunkled Socks with a contrast cuff, heel, and toe. We have 6 beautiful kit colorways from which to choose and it all comes packed in a printed cotton project bag with an illustrated tag by Susan. And we are throwing in a set of assorted stitch markers in a little tin for you.

I made my pair of Crunkled Socks, in the photos, using the Strawflower (main color) and Rhubarb (contrast color) colorways. I used a US size 1/2.25mm needle (I use double-pointed needles). I did a toe variation using my How I Make My Socks (free pattern) standard toe but Kay uses an umbrella toe in the pattern that looks great.

I used the contrast color for the cuff, heel, and toe. For the heel flap, I switched to the contrast color and continued with the contrast color through completing the heel turn. Then I went back to the main color until the toe.

One last thing, I ended up with 13.5 grams leftover from the main color and 27.5 grams leftover from the contrast color. I wear a US size 8 women's shoe. I completed the cuff and leg as directed in the pattern.
