A short while ago I wanted to knit something small, fairly simple but with interest, and something that I would wear. When I was browsing around I ran across Caitlin Hunter’s Alpine Bloom hat pattern. I saw that it used a sport weight yarn and I was done looking. I love the colorwork in this hat. I knew our Woolens sport weight yarn would be perfect. Off I went.
I fell into the Alpine Bloom hat and didn’t come up for air until it was done. At this point, I wrote Caitlin a quick message to see if we could create a kit using her pattern because I loved the experience and the hat so much. I always ask for permission when we create a kit for a pattern that isn’t mine and Caitlin said sure! Thank you, Caitlin. You can find Caitlin’s Instagram account here.
Here is some information about the two versions I made (in the photo):
* For both hats I made the second size which is for an adult small / medium. The finished circumference is about 20 inches and this size fits my head circumference which is about 22 inches.
* I used US sizes 3 and 5 needles to get an accurate gauge. These happen to be the same size as suggested in the pattern, but always check!
* For the first version in the Chestnut brown I made the shorter brim as directed in the pattern with plenty of yarn left at the end.
* I knitted a second version with a 4-inch brim for turning up, which Caitlin suggests for length. For the longer-brimmed hat, I ended up with 12 grams of the Main Color leftover. So there was enough yarn for this version with two skeins of Woolens.
* Important Kit Note: If you are making the large / extra-large size which has a 23.5-inch circumference with the longer 4-inch brim you will need a second skein of the Main Color to be safe.
The Alpine Bloom hat is stunning, it’s a work of art. Caitlin’s chart work is impressive and beautiful. I think you’ll enjoy this pattern and the finished hat. I’ve made two and could easily make another.
Included in the Alpine Bloom Hat Kit:
* Enough of our Woolens yarn to make one Alpine Bloom hat in any of the three sizes with the shorter brim as written in the pattern. Only if you are making the longer brim for turning, as Caitlin mentions in the front matter of the pattern, AND the large / extra-large size will you need a second skein for the Main Color.
