Jennifer Berg is an up and coming designer who has an incredible gift for integrating her life into her work. It has been fun to follow her over the last couple of years to see what she’s been up to as far as her designing goes. She has so much talent. Here is Jennifer’s introduction in her own words:

"My name is Jennifer Berg, aka Native Knitter. I dove into the design world this past summer with a full force attitude and the community has been amazingly welcoming. I want to bring Native American design into the Knitting Community and represent my people (Dine) with enthusiasm and inclusion. I want to share my culture and encourage others to learn more about the Native people that live in the surrounding areas. I love being Navajo and believe that this movement for inclusion of all races, genders, and ethnicities in the knitting community is important and such an example to the rest of the world that people can and will fight for one another with Love."

That’s an impressive message. Quite a while ago when looking at Jen's work, I fell in love with the Shik’is Hat, and I knew I wanted to knit one for myself right away.

Here is what Jennifer has to say about this design:

"Shik’is (my friend in Navajo) hat is inspired by Acoma pottery. I obviously draw so much inspiration from this particular type of pottery and admire the curves, bold black lines against the white clay and the subtle pops of color. Everyone needs a great beanie to wear on those cold morning walks as the sun is still warming up the land. I named my Collection Shik’is (my Friend) because I’d love for you to make and gift any of these patterns to a loved one, a new friend, or your family members over this season. I’d love to see the finished product, use #shikiscollection"

Check out all of Jennifer’s work on Ravelry. You may recognize a couple of designs from Making Magazine.

Give her a follow in Instagram, she’s @nativeknitter. Jen’s Instagram feed is so beautiful. It’s a must follow.

Today, with Jen’s permission, we have created some beautiful kits for her Shik’is Hat. I loved knitting this hat and I love the fit of it, as well. It is the perfect hat. The stranded colorwork makes the hat extra warm and squishy, I love the bold graphic design and the pop of color at the top. It’s a winning combination combined with our Home Worsted yarn.

I have pulled together four fantastic color kit choices from which to choose for your kits along with an optional Luxury Vegan Pom to top it off. It’s a beautiful little kit and the perfect entertaining but small knitting project for the summer weather.

The pattern is NOT included in the kit. Please purchase the pattern directly from Jen’s pattern shop!
Sizing Information: Jen's pattern is written for one size. The hat fits my 22-inch circumference head comfortably. To make the hat a little bigger, I suggest going up a needle size and you could also eliminate the corrugated rib for one color ribbing to add elasticity.

The Kit Includes:
  • Home Worsted Weight in three colors. There are four color choices: Peppercorn (charcoal), Picket Fence (creamy white) and Poppy (bright red); Peppercorn (charcoal), Picket Fence (creamy white) and Humble Gold (beautiful yellow); Scout (Teal), March Wind (medium grey) and Field (mustard); Huron (navy blue), March Wind (medium grey) and Marmalade (pumpkin orange). You will receive enough yarn to make one Shik'is Hat.
  • An optional Luxury Faux-Fur Pom. Each kit option is paired with a hand-selected pom.
  • Your kit will come packaged in a printed cotton project bag.
