Today, with Gudrun’s permission, we are bringing to life our version of the Kellister Hat Kits. I started and finished my own Kellister in no time at all because with this type of colorwork and the smallness of a hat project, you just can’t put it down until it’s done. It’s gorgeous with the perfect amount of colorwork. I love the way Gudrun kept the crown simple with one color. I also love the turned-up brim with the corrugated ribbing. The pattern is well-written and clear, so simple, straightforward, and fun. Kellister is the best combination of design and written pattern.
I made the hat exactly as written except that I did an easy long-tail cast-on instead of the recommended German Twisted Method. I think it looks great either way. I did make the longer version of the hat, Gudrun has instructions to make a shorter version at the crown, as well.
This is the squishiest, most fun, and cozy colorwork hat all designed by the best of the best in our industry, Gudrun Johnston.
The kit colors I’ve put together for you here make an absolutely stunning hat. This might be my go-to gift for the next holiday season.

"This hat is worked bottom up in the round. After working the ribbing the hat is turned inside out to accommodate the folded brim and so that the right side of the corrugated ribbing is showing.” A video tutorial link is provided in the pattern to help with the brim.
Here is some information about our Kellister Hat Kit:
- The finished hat weighs 65 grams without the pom.
- I made a 2-inch pom holding all four colors of the yarn together to top off the hat.
- I made the longer version of the hat.
- In the kit, you are getting quite a bit over 200 grams of our Wisconsin Woolen Spun Fingering Weight yarn. You’ll be able to make at least 2 and maybe even 3 of these hats by moving the colors around. I plan on making another version with gray as the main color next. This should be fun.
Included in the Kellister Hat Kit:
- Four skeins of Wisconsin Woolen Spun Fingering Weight yarn in the following colorways:
Hawthorn (dark brown)
Jam (red)
Quaker Gray (medium heathered gray)
Penny (heathered golden mustard)
Note: You have enough of each color to use any as the Main Color and switch around the Contrast Colors. I used Hawthorn as the MC, Quaker Gray as CC1, Jam as CC2, and Penny as CC3.
- 20 BWC Ring Stitch Markers in assorted colors.
- The kit comes packed in our printed cotton project bag with an illustrated tag by me.
