About five years ago at Christmas time, I was trying to think of a project to use a couple of skeins of Knit Collage yarn and I came up with a pair of mittens. I was completely enamored with these lumpy-bumpy handspun mittens I created. Truly, I have to gush, the mittens are one of the best things I’ve ever made and the yarn is pure love and magic. At that time I posted a cryptic recipe on an Instagram post (you can find it if you scroll way way back) and it got a big reaction. Later I saw Amy Small at an event and she told me she completely sold out of the colorway I used in the mittens on Instagram. We were both thrilled.

Amy and I go back a long time. She started her company around 2010 and Amy told me years later that I was the first person to mention it online when I made a free scarf pattern on my old blog. Click here to see that blogpost. Also, Amy works with a group of very talented women in India who spin and create her yarns. Click here to read about this incredible yarn from Knit Collage. It is quite an amazing journey this yarn goes through to get made and in the hands of knitters everywhere. Knit Collage yarn has even been featured in the stores like Anthropology and Free People, which I find fun and interesting.

Anyway, ever since I knit that first pair of Knit Collage Mittens I have knit so many pairs, dozens, in all sorts of Knit Collage yarns and in a couple of different mitten styles. I give these mittens away as special gifts and they are received so well. I created an undercuff, which is a word I made up, not sure I’m the first, but it is a knit cuff added after the fact in Home Worsted that snugs up under the wrist of the mitten.

So today I’m super excited to be able to bring you our new mitten collaboration kit! It’s been a long time in the making and I hope you love it.

For the first time, Barrett Wool Co. is combining forces with another yarn company! The new Knit Collage Mitten Kits come with my brand new mitten patterns, Knit Collage Mittens - Two Patterns included for free, and your choice of one or two skeins of Knit Collage yarn. Also, we are throwing in at no additional cost your colorway of choice for a mini-skein of Home Worsted for the Undercuff, 10 of our large BWC Ring Stitch Markers, and it’s all packed up in a hand stamped cotton project bag with an illustrated tag by me.

Now, this is really IMPORTANT information! PLEASE READ the following.

The mitten patterns, there are two brand new patterns included, are written for ONE or TWO skeins of the Knit Collage yarns. The yarn is pricey for obvious reasons, it’s handspun by a small and talented group of women in India. Each skein is like a little treasure or piece of art and I truly mean this.

You get to choose if you want to knit with ONE skein of Knit Collage where you will literally use every inch of the yarn to get a pair of mittens. It can be done and I give you lots of instructions and “warnings” about how to be successful doing this. I have knit these mittens with one skein so many times and it does work out!

OR you can knit the mittens with TWO skeins of Knit Collage where you will have plenty of yarn leftover and you can then combine your leftovers if you gather a few skeins to make a fun scrappy pair of mittens in the end. Also, you can relax and alter the lengths of the mittens without any worries.

Either way, you will have success with your mitten knitting, do what works for you!

These completely joyful mittens are so much fun to knit and to give to people. If you give it a try I think you will be like me and become completely overwhelmed with love for this yarn and these mittens.

And FYI, I get Clover brand wooden double-pointed needles, 6-inch length, to knit these mittens. They are perfect for this project.
